Phoebe Lucy Rathmell was born in Sydney, Australia. In 2011 she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours Class 1) at the College of Fine Arts, Sydney. She works at Conny Dietzschold Gallery and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Australia.
Phoebe is the recipient of an Australian Postgraduate Award and is currently a Masters by Research candidate at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales. Phoebe's research is centered on her phenomenological exploration into silence as a manifestation of her meditative art practice. Her interest in this field of study stems from over twelve years of meditation practice.
In 2011, Phoebe was awarded the Barry Keldoulis Gallery Award, runners up in the Tim Olsen Drawing Prize, the William Fletcher Foundation Grant and the Dean's award for academic excellence.
Early 2013, she was selected for the Directors Cut Blake Prize. In May 2013 she exhibited in 'Peripheral Visions: Contemporary Art from Australia' held at Garis & Hahn Gallery in Bowery, New York as well as a performance installation at CutLog Art Fair, New York. December 2013, Phoebe received the Viktoria Marinov Award to undertake training in Japanese Zen calligraphy in Japan in 2014.
In July, 2013, Phoebe had a solo exhibition N O T H I N G H E A R at ARCHIVE gallery in Newtown.
On August 6th, Phoebe performed an ephemeral toothpick installation at Conny Dietzschold Gallery in Darlinghurst as part of the New Australian Paintings exhibition.
September 2013, Rathmell exhibited in the Tim Olsen Prize at Kudos Gallery in Paddington. In October, 2013 Phoebe's work was exhibited as part of the Ganer Art Center's Gala Fundraiser in New York. In December 2013, Rathmell took part in 'BackStage' Exhibition at Conny Dietzschold Gallery, Darlinghurst.
